Storage, syncing between devices, and what happens to a photograph after you take it.
In your account, not on one phone
Everything you keep is stored in your account, so a lost or replaced phone doesn’t lose it. Sign in on a second device and it’s all there, and a capture on one appears on the other.
You can start without an account and keep things straight away. Those things live on that phone’s guest account — which means they aren’t yet protected against losing it, and can’t appear anywhere else. Signing in keeps everything you have already captured and gives it somewhere safe to be.
What understands your photographs
A photograph you capture is sent to Google’s Gemini to be read — that’s how the model number and the colour and the dates come out of it. Your photographs aren’t used to train AI models, and they aren’t used for advertising. The full list of who touches your data, and why, is in the privacy policy.
Location
An item can carry an approximate place, which is what lets trips gather themselves. It comes from the photograph’s own data when the photograph has any, or from a single coarse reading at the moment you capture — and only if you allowed your phone’s location permission. It’s rounded to roughly a kilometre before it’s stored, and nothing is tracked in the background.
To keep places out of it entirely, decline or revoke the location permission in your phone’s settings, and exclude location when picking or sharing a photograph. Your phone’s own picker can do that per photo.
